In the storage auction business you will come across quite a bit of jewelry and other odd items with hard to read hallmarks. It’s a good idea to get yourself a jeweler’s loupe so that you can magnify this tiny writing and make sense of it. For starters, you’re going to need a jeweler’s loupe when sorting your gold. With this, you can check items to see if they are labeled 10k, 14k, 18k, 24k, etc. With rings, this will often be engraved on the inner band. On earrings, it can be on the base or even the skinny part that goes through the earlobe. Necklaces are usually labeled on the clasp.
